Location

Ethiopia is located in what is known as “Eastern ear of Africa” or “Horn of Africa”.

Area and population size

The aria size is approximately five times the area of United Kingdom or twice the state of Texas. According to the World Bank the population size of Ethiopia in 2010 was around 84.799 million.

Topography

Massive highland complex of mountains and dissected plateaus divided by Great Rift Valley running generally southwest to northeast and surrounded by lowlands, steppes, or semi desert; Great terrain diversity determines wide variations in climate, soils, natural vegetation, and settlement patterns.

Climate

Altitude and geographic location produce three climatic zones: cool zone above 2,400 meters where temperatures range from near freezing to 16° C; temperate zone at elevations of 1,500 to 2,400 meters with temperatures from 16° C to 30° C; and hot zone below 1,500 meters with both tropical and arid conditions and daytime temperatures ranging from 27° C to 50° C. Normal rainy season from mid-June to mid-September (longer in the southern highlands) preceded by intermittent showers from February or March; remainder of year generally dry.

Economy

The economy of Ethiopia is predominantly Agriculture, which accounts for half of gross domestic product (GDP), 43% of exports, and 85% of total employment. The principal exports from this sector are coffee, oil seeds, pulses, flowers, vegetables, sugar and foodstuffs for animals. There is also a thriving livestock sector, exporting carrel on the hoof and hides and skins. 25% of the populations grow coffee and it accounts for 55% of Ethiopia's exports.
